for me while Inception did not.
Inception, despite the hype and the dream within a dream within a dream/I am the dreamer dreaming the dream hyperbole, bored me within twenty minutes. The Adjustment Bureau is a similar sort of who’s on first-type movie, but it held my interest. Why? Investment. I quickly became invested in the characters and the outcome of their story. There was romance, chemistry, and a larger-than-life connection between the two protagonists.
The movie follows the classic romance formula: Boy meets girl. Boy and girl are inexplicably and overwhelmingly drawn to each other. Boy and girl cannot stop thinking about each other. Despite the obstacles thrown in their way, boy and girl cannot stay apart. Boy and girl are willing to risk everything for love.
Was the movie perfect? Nah. There were some flaky aspects to the story – but then who isn’t guilty of the occasional Deus Ex Machina? Overall, yeah, the movie worked, because Matt Damon and Emily Blunt made it work. I believed in them.
You know, hubby is the one who really wanted to see this movie on the big screen because our relationship, from the moment we met, has been very similar – we experienced the same sort of instant, inexplicable attraction, the same sense that no matter what, we belonged together – that there is no one else out there for either of us, at least not in the same way…not to mention the challenges we faced before reuniting. Plus the last day? The last 24 hours before he came back to me? Deus Ex Machina. I’ll get around to it eventually.
No spoilers. I think you should see The Adjustment Bureau and judge for yourselves.
